Grinstein The CMS Collaboration at the LHC has reported a remarkable and unexpected phenomenon in very high-multiplicity high energy proton–proton collisions: a positive correlation between two particles produced at similar azimuthal angles, spanning a large range in rapidity. We suggest that this “ridge”like correlation may be a reflection of the rare events generated by the collision of aligned flux tubes connecting the valence quarks in the wave functions of the colliding protons. The “spray” of particles resulting from the approximate line source produced in such inelastic collisions then gives rise to events with a strong correlation between particles produced over a large range of both positive and negative rapidity. We suggest an additional variable that is sensitive to such a line source which is related to a commonly used measure, ellipticity. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ridge correlation structure in high-multiplicity pp collisions with CMS
Abstract Results on two-particle angular correlations are presented in proton–proton collisions at center of mass energies of 7 TeV, over a broad range of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle. In very high-multiplicity events at 7 TeV, a pronounced structure emerges in the two-dimensional correlation function for particle pairs with intermediate pT of 1–3 GeV/c, in the kinematic region 2.0 < | η|...
متن کاملLong-range multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions
The forward-backward long-range multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions are investigated in the model with two independent sources of particles: one leftand one right-moving wounded nucleon. A good agreement with the UA5 collaboration proton-antiproton data at the c.m. energy of 200 GeV is observed. For comparison the model with only one source of particles is also discussed. PACS...
متن کاملSome aspects of multiparticle production in high energy nuclear interactions
We report some results on mean normalized multiplicity (RA). This quantity shows independence with energy for pion-nucleus and proton-nucleus interactions both. The variation of RA4 with mean number of collisions made by incident hdaron inside the nucleus has also been studied.

The gluon dominance model offers a description of multiparticle production in e + e −-annihilation and proton-proton collisions. The multiplicity distributions in e + e − annihilation are well described. The energy dependence of model parameters gives the dynamic parton stage and hadronisation picture. It is shown that this model has confirmed oscillations in sign of the ratio of factorial cumu...
متن کاملSoft QCD Results from CMS
Studies of hadron production in proton-proton collisions, including charged particle transverse momentum, pseudo-rapidity and event-by-event multiplicity distributions at √ s = 0.9, 2.36 and 7 TeV are shown. Measured spectra of identified strange hadrons, reconstructed based on their decay topology, are also presented. Comparisons to several QCD Monte Carlo models and tunes are discussed. Resul...
